Heike Humphreys is coming to Ponsanooth Hall, TR3 7EE on Saturday and Sunday, November 11th and 12th. Her workshops offer us ‘A Taste of Tribal’! Through 8 hours of dancing, we’ll learn funky combos and slow & slinky moves, led by Heike and her inimitable way of teaching …lots of fun!
Saturday: 1 – 5.30 p.m.with 1/2 hr. tea break; Sunday: 11 – 3.45 p.m. including 3/4 hour lunch break.
Both days will cover two main aspects of Tribal dance. Heike will guide us through techniques for fusion combos from a variety of belly dance styles. These include Keti Sherif’s A-Z, through Astrobelly via Salimpour format to Tribal style. She loves to create shapes, contrast and surprises…so be prepared for all this! ‘Slow and slinky’ is the other side of Tribal dance. Heike will help us to perfect techniques for creating the ‘ooey-gooey’ performance that looks so mesmerising. We’ll practise partner and group work to create exciting dance. There will be focus on arms: we’ll learn beautiful and powerful moves. Heike loves to play zills, so she’ll get us practising that too!
We haven’t come across this form of fusion dance before in our Belly Bolly workshops down here. Tribal Dance is a vibrant mix of Arabic, Indian, N. African, gypsy and dashes of all sorts of other styles from other places and times, developed initially in the States, then evolving into many forms. It’s characterised by striking layered costume, turbans and flower-filled hairstyles, massive jewellery, playing zills, and lots of proud ‘attitude’. So, what we learn from Heike will add to our range of technique and experience that we can incorporate into our own dances. What a treat!

So, I hope to see you there!
